VESTIBULAR REHAB

Vestibular rehabilitation is a specialized form of therapy intended to alleviate problems caused by vestibular disorders such as dizziness, vertigo, and balance problems by helping the brain compensate for inner ear dysfunction.  Other symptoms that can arise secondary to the vestibular disorder such as nausea and / or vomiting, reduced ability to focus / concentrate and fatigue.

How does Vestibular Rehabilitation work?

Vestibular rehabilitation works by promoting vestibular compensation, where the brain learns to rely on other sensory inputs—like vision and proprioception from the legs, neck, and ankles—to maintain balance when the inner ear is impaired. It also addresses secondary issues like fatigue, reduced concentration, and decreased physical activity caused by vestibular dysfunction.

What to expect from Vestibular Rehabilitation

A specialist physiotherapist conducts a thorough assessment to identify the specific problems caused by the vestibular disorder. Based on this evaluation, a customized exercise program is developed, which may include:

  1. Eye and head movement exercises to improve gaze stability and reduce dizziness.

  2. Balance and walking exercises to enhance coordination and prevent falls.

  3. Habituation exercises to gradually reduce dizziness triggered by specific movements.

  4. Techniques to reposition inner ear crystals in cases of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV).

  5. Education on daily activities, falls prevention, and confidence-building.

Expected Outcomes

Most patients notice improvement within six weeks, with the most significant gains typically occurring within the first six months. While some vestibular deficits may be permanent, Vestibular rehabilitation helps the brain compensate, improving balance, reducing dizziness, and enhancing quality of life. Persistence and adherence to the exercise program are key to success.
